October 2015 – Oracle Open World in SF featured several opening keynotes lead off by CEO Mark Hurd. Joining Mark, were CTO Larry Ellison and one of their strategic partner’s CEO, Brian Krzanich of Intel. The theme of the keynotes was the transformation of the data center and the resulting data expansion that accompanies the transition. The conference this year featured the 20th anniversary celebration of the Java One event. In addition the Java event, the conference had over 2500 sessions, a live broadcast on CNBC, 8 exhibit halls, a large plastic ball pit for participants and Oracle related/sponsored championship trophies – the Giants world series trophies, the Team USA America Cup, and the Warriors NBA Championship trophy.

Intel keynote at Oracle Open World 2015

The Intel keynote focused on the shift to real time data analytics from this large data. The enterprise is working on providing solutions for understanding, analyzing and securing this data, however for the user, the shift to the cloud has to be both easy and compelling while providing increased performance over direct data center solutions. To address the challenge Oracle and Intel have formed Project Apollo. This is an optimization lab for software development and testing. The lab, to date, has spun up 1500 VMs that can be used simultaneously on a problem and provide active balancing of the workload. Systems like the ExaData platfom include the new Intel Optane board, high performance SSDs and intel DIMMs.

Oracle rollout for the cloud

In combination these solutions of new hardware and software optimization is shifting the products from simple computing servers to integrated Trusted Analytic Platforms (TAP). This platform is designed for cloud analytic services and is optimized for input and interactions with apps. This interface allows both consumer and enterprise IoT devices to store and analyze data in an environment that is much more high performance than the IoT device itself. The key of the TAP solution is being able to manage and maintain private data silos while supporting collaborative data analysis.

Following the Intel partner announcements, CTO Larry Ellison discussed how Oracle is the only company in the joint space of SaaS, PaaS and IaaS. This allows Oracle to focus on six design goals – Cost, Reliability, performance, standards, compatibility and security. The global environment the past few years has moved security to being the number one goal for both data storage and network access. This has shifted the security solution from being simple archive encryption to an “always on” security environment that is architected as encrypted data in the cloud and the encryption keys are kept on premise. These solutions are being designed for both single tenant and multi-tenant servers.
